Teppal ran out the winner of a controversial and dramatic race for the Group One Emirates Poule d’Essai des Pouliches at ParisLonchamp today.

A field of fourteen three year old fillies went to post for this one mile Classic, the French 1,000 Guineas.

Controversy engulfed this race beforehand. In the aftermath of U S Navy Flag’s slip in the earlier Poule d’Essai des Poulains, jockeys claimed that the course was not safe.

There was a significant delay as conditions and a contingency plan were discussed, which ultimately resulted in the race taking place on the outer track, used for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

As the race finally got underway, roughly thirty minutes later than scheduled, Zonza and Polydream were prominent with Teppal. However, Ryan Moore soon moved Could It Be Love to the fore and she led by a length from Sea Prose and Teppal.

Could It Be Love turned for home with a length advantage over Sea Prose, with Red Line challenging.

Could It Be Love kept on with the rails to help her, but was overwhelmed late on by a wave of challengers, as the complete complexion of the race changed.

Teppal showed a good turn of foot when delivered by Olivier Peslier – and hit the front inside the final furlong, to win a blanket finish from Couer De Beaute and Wind Chimes, with Capla Temptress making up miles of ground late on for fourth and Barkaa fifth, in a wild finish.

Teppal, a daughter of Camacho, is trained by David Simcock, who was celebrating a first Classic victory. The unbeaten filly is now three from three, having won last year at Lingfield Park and Kempton Park.

Simcock told Equidia Pro: “She got a lovely run round, she had a good draw and a good position.

“The way the race panned out meant a couple of horses were going to go first. He pulled her out and she quickened up really well, so I’m delighted.

“She saw it out well which was a big worry coming here over a mile, but she got it well.

“I wasn’t that confident because of the stamina issue and the rain last night, but the one thing she is is classy.

“If you look at her style and make-up, we were quite confident we could come (straight here) without a trial, she’s very clean winded, and it worked out very well.”
